Pigeon Excitement

Okay, so I told you guys about the pigeons, right? They're all over my little suburban town lately. I had no idea why there were so many, so suddenly. So I asked tonight at the wildlife museum and they said they're probably nesting. Ah, Spring.

I got home and said to Joe, "S. said there's so many because they're nesting."

Joe said, "Probably behind our dryer!!"

"Nope, I took care of that!" I said, and proudly told him how once I realized they were perching on the laundry room door (which is on our balcony), I'd waited for them to fly away and then SHUT the door. Heh. I am so sly and clever.

Meg, 1 : pigeons, 0.

So tonight I noticed that my cat peed on our bathmat (*sigh*), and I took it out to the washer/dryer unit. I opened the door (which was still shut from the time I closed it early yesterday morning, to keep the pigeons away, remember), and ... you guessed it! A big ole pigeon was sitting quietly beside the washer!! On top of a plastic bag (how'd THAT get there?). And the icing on the cake? -- there was AN EGG right in front of it!!!!

Holy cow, I was freaking out!! There was bird poop on my washer, so I got the gloves and clorox bleach wipes. I cleaned it (yes, with the pigeon still there; it didn't fly away while I searched for cleaning supplies), and then got the washer all ready, towel inside, hot water, plenty of detergent, turned it on, and ran inside real quick. I threw away the trash bag of clorox wipes in the trash chute, and when I came back, my plan had worked. The noise of the washer had scared away the pigeon and there was more fresh poop on the balcony floor (the poop was not part of the plan, but oh well).

Oh my god!!! I can't believe any of that! I shut the laundry room door again, and I hope hope hope there aren't any left I didn't see!!!! The egg is still there, but since it's not on a nest, and that pigeon wasn't sitting ON it, I don't think it's been warm for a while. So it shouldn't hatch. I didn't hear any baby bird noises, so I don't think I missed anyone, but I can't SEE on top of the dryer. I'll inspect tomorrow when it's light out and I'm not a mess of nerves. Though if I find any dead (or live!) birds, I'm going to wig out all over again!!!

I was going back and forth between worrying that it was injured to just hoping it'd fly away and also feeling SO GUILTY that I'd trapped that poor bird in there, in the dark, for over 24 hours!!!

Oh man. I am going to be up for a long time tonight!
